If You Are Overrun With Dust Mites Here’s Some Comforting News

Dust mites. They’re disgusting microscopic creatures. Not only that, a surging population surge can trigger an allergic reaction or for some make their asthma worse. The best way to minimize the symptoms is rid your clothes, pillows and carpets of the pests. To do that you can’t be half hearted. Here are six things anyone can do.

Use protective covers on beds, pillows and mattresses to reduce the problem of mites by as much as 1000 times as compared to non covered ones. Thick vinyl covers, non woven synthetic covers or finely woven fabrics can be used. If you are planning to buy hypoallergenic bedding make sure the pore size is no bigger than 6 micron to prevent dust mites.

Is removing the carpeting an option? This is an especially useful idea for the bedrooms since one square foot of carpet can harbor over 10,000 of the tiny critters. Vacuuming sometime only recirculates the dust and mites so if you can avoid that by living with a hardwood floor it might be better. At the least get a vac with a HEPA filter to help remove these microscopic beasts.

Get a dehumidifier to dry out the air in your bedroom. Mites love warm and humid. But aren’t as fond of cold and dryer conditions. Using a dehumidifier makes it harder for them to thrive.

One word. Heat. Research suggests that your clothes can be nearly 100% dust mite free by washing them in water that’s at least–0 degrees. In comparison washing in warm water kills off only maybe 6-7% of the indigenous mite population. So where possible clothes should be washed at–0 degrees to remove dust mites effectively.

For those items of clothing you’d rather not subject to such hot water another solution is a laundry additive called DeMite. A couple of spoonfuls does the trick. Giving you another way to control mites in the laundry room.

Finally if your kids have soft toys you want to wash them regularly too. Or you can place the toy in a bag inside the freezer to painlessly freeze the mites away.

So as you can see, when it comes to dust mite reactions antihistamines needn’t always be the answer. You can get ahead of them by frequent dusting and vacuuming of the room, washing clothes once a week in hot water, or covering pillows and mattresses with special casings. Any of these can help you deal effectively with allergies caused by dust mites.
