Clean Air Ducts Can Mean A Healthier Home
Regular maintenance of the home cooling and heating systems should include the periodic cleaning of the air ducts. These ducts can build up with dirt and debris from the home. When having the regular furnace and air conditioning maintenance done, it can be a great time to have the ducts cleaned also.
Cool air in the home is collected by return ducts that bring it to the furnace. The air is warmed, and then distributed back to the rooms through a series of ducts. This process can allow dust, pet debris, and other waste to become trapped within the ducts. Removing the build up within the vents can help to improve air quality, and, if the build up is causing a blockage, the air flow.
For new homes, or other homes that have had renovations, this should be done. When there is construction within the house, sawdust and other debris can end up in the vents and then be circulated throughout the home. Homes that have not had renovations should have the ducts cleaned from time to time as well to keep them clean and reduce airborne irritants.
In homes with children and pets, small items such as toys and pencils can end up in the ducts. This can cause a blockage if debris accumulates around items within the ducts. Many times these items cannot be removed without having a professional clean the air ducts.
When cleaning them, the company you choose will need to cut access panels in the ducts in order to attach vacuum hoses. This is dome near the furnace, usually starting with the intake areas. All of the vent grills will need to be covered to seal up the system and allow for maximum suction.
The most common kind of vacuum system is one mounted on a truck. These have the best suction. When the hose is in place and the vents are covered, the vacuum is started. Most times, the cleaning begins with blowing air into the system to loosen dust and debris. Then, the vacuum can effectively clear out the vents.
Sometimes, small holes will be made in the basement duct work to allow small tools to be inserted. This can allow for the dust to be agitated and sucked up easier by the vacuum system. Then, the furnace and air conditioner coil are cleaned. All access panels and small holes are sealed back up, and the system is ready to go.
Cleaning furnace and cooling system vents takes a couple of hours. It is a good idea, and while there is no concrete scientific proof that it improves air quality, it can be beneficial, in particular for people that have respiratory problems or allergies. It can also help to reduce the dust that is circulated within the house. If they have not been cleaned in some time, cleaning the air ducts can improve the operating efficiency of the furnace.
