As a housewife, I have a lot of experience on washing clothes. After becoming a mother, I gain even more knowledge on washing clothes for my baby. A lot of mothers focus on nutrition and education for their babies. Baby clothes washing is also an important aspect for raising a healthy baby. Clothes are in direct contact with baby’s skin. Anything goes wrong in washing baby clothes, baby’s skin suffers. Sometimes, you see rashes on baby’s skin, it can be related to the clothes that he or she wears. Therefore, it is important to share with you my understanding on baby clothes washing.
Washing baby clothes is a bit different from washing clothes of adults and older children. Generally speaking, you need to handle and wash baby clothes with more care. Before you have put the clothes on your little baby, you need to pre-wash them. Though new clothes look clean, a lot of chemical residues may be left on the clothes during productions. A pre-wash before wearing helps remove these remaining chemicals.
Other than a pre-wash, you may wash the baby clothes separately from the clothes of other family members. Though this is troublesome and time consuming, it is definitely beneficial to your baby. Washing clothes separately prevents the chemical residues from ordinary laundry detergent from leaving on the baby clothes. Besides, cross contamination between baby clothes and clothes of other family member can be prevented. If all the clothes are washed together, the bacteria and germs from mother’s or father’s clothes may get onto baby’s clothes.
Though there are many harmful chemicals in ordinary laundry detergents, baby clothes cannot be washed with water only. You need to buy a baby safe detergent. Detergents specially formulated for baby clothes are usually soap free and biodegradable. Compared to ordinary laundry detergents, they cause less irritation to baby’s skin. The more natural the detergent, the better it is for baby’s skin. Therefore, you should always try to find the organic and fragrance and dye free ones.
Water temperature for washing baby clothes should be kept low. Cold water can help eliminate the risk of building up bacteria as well as keep the clothes from shrinking. Also, you need to run extra rinse cycle for baby clothes. This is to ensure that the minimal soap residues are left on the baby clothes.
Washing clothes in different color and materials categories helps baby clothes stay new all the time. Basically, you may separate clothes into three different color groups including colors, darks and white or very lights. For baby clothes made of different materials, except for silk and wools, you may wash all the others together. For silk and wools, it is always better wash with low water temperature and by hands.
