Carpet Cleaning Answers For Spots And Stains

No matter how good we are about keeping our carpets clean, somebody is going to spill something or track in dirt that may be tough to get out. Seeing wine or ink on your fluffy white carpet may be horrifying. But you have several options for carpet cleaning that may just do the trick.

When a spill does happen, do not fret and rush to rub it out. Rubbing a stain will generally do more damage and may not get the stain out anyway. Even if you are able to get out the spot, what you may end up with is a frayed, uneven patch of carpet.

It is better to calmly go fetch a few white cloths and a cleanser. First check the stain for anything solid. For instance, if salsa was spilled, there may be pieces of onion or tomato in the spot. Pick these out by hand. Next, work on the liquid. Using a cloth, blot up the excess liquid. Be careful not to rub at all, only blot. Just press down with the cloth, sopping up the liquid. If your cloth gets drenched, use another one.

Apply your cleanser directly onto the spot. A spray bottle is best. When choosing a cleaner from the store, avoid those that are made up of soaps. Soaps will not usually work on stains and is not good to keep putting on carpets. Look for oxygen based products instead.

You can also use some common household products. People have had amazing luck with a water-vinegar solution. Try 2/3 water and 1/3 distilled vinegar. Spray onto the stain and allow it to penetrate for a few minutes. Then, blot. Repeat this process as many times as necessary. The vinegar will leave behind a scent but this will go away within a day. Vacuum the area once it’s dry and you’re all set.

Another thing to consider is isopropyl alcohol. It is rarely damaging to carpets but to be safe, test it out on a small hidden area. Apply a little in a secluded corner of the room. A 1 part alcohol and 2 parts water combination is a good solution. Use this mixture in the same way as described for the vinegar mixture. When you are done, there may be a lingering alcohol smell. This will also dissipate within a day. You may want to try sprinkling some baking soda on the area and let in sit about a half hour before you vacuum.

If you are worried that you cannot get stains out or if you have several that have set in, consider calling in the professionals. They will have certain industrial strength products and will be able to determine what to use on various kinds of stains.
