Washing Your Windows The Right Way

Yes, now is the time to put some light, warmth and freshness back into that cold dark house. And since the winter months can make a house seem damp and smelly, perhaps one of the first things on which you should focus is freshening up the stale air in your old homestead.

The screens in your windows probably haven’t been used all winter and they definitely need a cleaning, as will other nooks and crannies in your home that haven’t seen the light of day in a while.

First of all you have to wash the windows. This is not difficult, but somewhat tedious. Storm windows must be taken down before you put your screens up. If your window screens are connected to the storm windows year around, then just pull down the screens you desire to use.

Anyhow, you should examine your screen’s condition and look for flaws as well as notice if there is dirt in the holes.

If the screen is really dirty, don’t just wipe it down. Put it in the bathtub with some warm soapy water, and at that time you can take an old cloth and give the screen a good scrubbing after it’s been left in the warm soapy water to soak for a while.

If you don’t want to put the screen in the bathtub, there are those who say that a very good lint roller can be rolled up and down the screen and it takes up all the fibers of dirt. Other people take out their power vacuum and have a go at the screen with that.

You can go to a home renovation store and find screen patches that can be placed over small holes in your screens. These are good if the holes are tiny and not to numerous, as they’ll help you keep out flies and mosquitoes. However, if you’ve got too many holes or they are pretty big, the patches won’t work and you’ll probably be better off purchsing new screens for your windows.

Some people end up replacing the entire window. You don’t necessarily have to if you can remove the window screen from the frame. In that case, it’s easy enough just to buy another one that will fit just as well as your old one did. It’s really simple, especially if you’re a really good do-it-yourselfer. Just remember that you may have to do it each year before there’s a change in the weather.
